Summer is the season of festivals, outings, and vacations… but also of UV rays, sweat, chlorine, and wind. For Afro and textured hair, this period can quickly lead to dryness, breakage, and loss of definition. However, taking care of your hair in summer doesn't have to be complicated.

Here are three simple tips to keep your hair hydrated, soft and healthy — while enjoying the season.

1. Focus on smart hydration… inside and out

When it's hot, our hair — like our body — gets thirsty. Water evaporates more quickly, making the hair fiber dry, dull, and brittle.

The right approach starts from within: drinking enough water every day helps keep the scalp healthy and hair supple.

But that's not enough. You also need to hydrate from the outside: 2 to 3 times a week, spray your hair with warm water and a few drops of light oil, then apply a moisturizing cream to retain moisture.

2. Take time for deep cleansing regularly

Between swimming, sunbathing, and tight hairstyles, hair needs to regenerate. A hydrating or nourishing mask left on for 30 to 45 minutes under a heated cap (or not, depending on your hair's porosity) can work wonders.
Alternate between hydration and nourishment depending on the condition of your hair.

To help you, Ôtentik has developed two types of complementary masks based on aloe vera, honey and Neem oil, to be incorporated according to your needs at the moment.

3. Do not neglect nighttime protection

At night, hair also dries out due to friction against the pillow, especially in summer.
Protecting your hair with a satin bonnet or a suitable pillowcase helps to retain moisture for longer — while reducing frizz upon waking.

A simple little trick that we recommend to all those who want neat curls when they wake up, even after a restless night.

In summary

Summer is for enjoying yourself, not worrying about your hair. With a few good habits and gentle care, you can fully enjoy the season while keeping your hair healthy.
